Board of Trustees
There are ten Trustees who meet regularly under the Chairmanship of Court Assistant Mr Richard Monk CMG OBE QPM. The Board of Trustees of the Charitable Trust has worked to provide comfort, support and education for deserving causes in mainly three specific arenas.
- Welfare of child victims of crime;
- The aged and infirm who have served their Country and their profession to the best of their ability;
- For selected City related charities.
Examples of Benevolence:
Treloar’s (which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary) provides education, therapy, care and independence training for young people with disabilities. The Company made a contribution of £10,000 to the Treloar Trust towards the purchase of a special bus, the Midi Bus, for use by the pupils at both the school and the college; as well as the provision of a CCTV system valued at some £15,000 for security monitoring, at Treloar’s College.
£5,000 was presented by the Lady Mayoress, Tessa Brewer, and then Senior Warden, John Purnell, to the Life Home Project Foundation in Phuket (Thailand) in 2006 following the disastrous Tsunami. The Life Home Project Foundation cares for mainly widows and orphans. For continuity, a freeman of the Company regularly visits the Foundation.
Education
The innovative Whittington Course, the brainchild of our Sponsoring Alderman Sir David Brewer CMG, serves to bring children from the socially deprived area of Thamesmead in South London into the City to show them that no goal is beyond their reach. Since its inception, this Course has helped to guide over 150 children towards a career in the City.
In establishing links with future Security Professionals, the Company has sponsored an annual award for the best Criminology paper with The University of East London. In addition to presenting the award, the Company affords the winning student the opportunity to network with the UK’s top Security experts and law enforcement agencies.
The Sheriffs’ Award.
In 2006 our Trustees introduced The Sheriffs’ Award as a way of recognising and awarding individuals or companies who have displayed great courage or innovative thinking in protecting People, Property or Liberty. The annual award is the first such City award in the history of Livery. The Award is open to all the “Blue Light” Services, individual members of the public, the Armed Services and to private organisations. The recipients receive a cheque for £2,000 presented by a serving Sheriff on behalf of the Company and their name is inscribed in a Book of Honour on display in The Old Bailey.
The Security Benevolent Fund (was Hear4U)
In 2006 the Hear4U Foundation was established to offer an on-line counselling and advisory service to the Security Profession. It offers a first line caring service that is prepared to listen and offer support wherever necessary.
Other Charitable Support:
We provide support to The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers’ annual Disneyland trip. An appeal for donations from our members has raised over £5,000 to sponsor a cab and finance for hotel accommodation for families of five of the most critically affected.
We have active participation with the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in offering advice with their security planning and protective initiatives. We have made grants to charities including:
Headway – The Brain Injury Society; SSAFA Forces Help; British Memorial Garden Trust; Police Rehabilitation Centre; The British Red Cross Society; City of London Police Widows and Orphans’ Fund; St Bartholomew the Great Heritage Trust; and The Royal British Legion.
In the future we look to establish an educational pilot scheme with Cadet Forces and to working with other Livery Companies in supporting Inner London Schools.
The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals is recognized as the charity for the wider world of security and we are proud to represent and safeguard its interests.
The City of London has always relied heavily upon good security to protects its people, property and world renowned reputation, but until 1999 the security profession had no Livery links.
The objects of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals are to create and nurture a culture that secures the principles which protect people, property and liberty.
The WCoSP is active across a number of sectors but our contribution to the City, Education and Welfare is particularly emphasised through:
The Sheriffs’ Award
A National award for bravery, celebrating Heroes or Organisations who have contributed to safeguarding our People, Property or our Liberty
The Whittington Course
A unique partnership with the Bexley Business Academy sponsored by Alderman Sir David Brewer CMG, to introduce Business Management students to the City of London and to encourage them to achieve their school motto that ”No goal is beyond our reach”
Hear4U.org.uk
A life style advice website providing counselling and medical assistance for those employed in the security profession.
In addition, we have supported worthy causes with donations totalling in excess of £110,000 to fund a broad range of organisations’ projects, and deserving individuals and families who have fallen upon difficult times.
